Miriam’s Dance

Ex. 15:20-21

20.And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrets and with dances.

21. And Miriam answered them, sing ye to the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.

Miriam’s dance was a response to God’s Miracles.

She led the women in worship using the instruments of song and dance.

Dances= Hebrew Macholah- A dance company or chorus, dances a round dance, dancing chorus.

Answered= Hebrew respond, sing shout, testify, announce

Sing=Hebrew-Sheer- strolling minstrelsy (Strongs Exhaustive Concordance)

Miriam was the first woman in the bible called a prophetess. Miriam sang and danced under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Deborah the prophetess also declared God’s praise in song (Jg.4: 4,5:1).

Musicians prophesy with harps (1Chr 25:1-3).

David’s Dance

2Sam.6: 13-15

13.And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings.

14.And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen e’-phod

15.So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.

David’s powerful and emotional dance was motivated by God’s love toward him and compassion given David a second chance. His dance was pure worship and a show of appreciation.

He danced with all his might abandoning all inhibitions, for the Ark of the Lord was returned to him. The Ark represented the presence of the Lord.

David’s dance was a visual demonstration proclaiming that it is time to dance. Dance is a symbol of victory, and joy.

In the Bible dance is used as a sign of joy, victory, deliverance a contrast to mourning, sadness and despair. Ecc.3: 4, Ps30: 11, Jer 31:13, Lam5: 15

Unlike their Egyptian neighbors, the Hebrews apparently did not use dance in mourning or burial rites. There is no mention of dance in funerary situations; “International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (Erdmans)

David learned his passionate worship from Obed- Edom.

2Sam. 6:1-9

1.Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand.

2.And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Ba’ale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the LORD of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims.

3.And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart.

4.And that brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark.

5.And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals.

6.And when they came to Nachon’s threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it.

7.And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.

8.And David was displeased, because he LORD had made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place Perezuzzah to this day.

9.And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and said, How shall the ark of the LORD come to me?

David’s first celebration of the ark was motivated by pride.

David decided to to transport the ark his own way.

David did not ask God.

God struck Uzzah down because of his irreverence.

Since the Philistines had captured the ark and destroyed Shiloh, the ark had no permanent resting place. The Levites alone were commissioned to transport the ark. (Num.4:25, 1Chr.13:9) Uzzah’s sin an infraction of this divine regulation. David apparently failed to inquire of the lord, transporting the ark in a Philistine expedient and not according to the divinely prescibed manner. ” (Unglers Bible Handbook)

David was angry and afraid concerning the death of Uzzah.

David left the Ark in Obed- Edom’s house for three months.

2Sam 6:11

11. And the ark of the LORD continued in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite three months; and the LORD blessed Obed-Edom, and all his household.”

David heard that Obed- Edom was being blessed because of the Ark of the Lord.

Obed-Edom = servant of Edom (The New Open Bible)

David Learned from Obed-Edom

  1. Worship the Lord because of his presence.

  2. Worship as a servant.

  3. Worship to please God, the way he wants.

  4. The correct way to transport the Ark based on scripture.

God gave David a second chance to transport the Ark. David responded to God’s mercy the second time with unselfish passionate gratitude. He led a victory celebration that was sanctioned by scripture.

2Sam 6:14” And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.”

Danced- Hebrew Karar – dance whirl, ragad- to stump, spring about (widely or with joy), jump, leap skip( Strongs Exhaustive Concordance)

The Michal Syndrome

David’s wife Michal ridiculed David for his dance, and stopped him from blessing her.

2Sam. 6:16

And as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal Saul’s daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart.

2Sam. 6:20

Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself!

Why didn’t Michal join her husband in the victory dance?

Why did Michal ridicule David’s worship?

Why did Michal stop her blessing?

  1. Michal’s response to David was out of character because she once loved David, but she did not love God.

  2. Michal did not have a proper prospective of position and leadership.

  3. Michal ‘s past caused her to draw back and be overly concerned about what people think.

  4. Michal did not have any children.

2Sam. 6:23

Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.

Michal is Saul’s daughter. (1Sam. 14:49)

Michal loves and saves David. (1Sam.18: 20-28)

Michal is taken from David and given to another husband Phalti. (1Sam.25-44)

Michal is restored to David. (2Sam 3:13-16)

Dance an instrument for ministry

The dance is a moving picture proclaiming that it is time to dance. The dance is a visual sign to the wounded and discouraged that God is a God of a second chance. God wants to restore and deliver.

The dance is a sign to the Michals of our day that it is time to dance and enjoy the presence of the Lord. The Lord has taken away the reproach so that we can experience full joy and victory that is attained in Jesus Christ. The dance will help to release Michal from the past so that the blessings of God may be received.
